Samuel Harris Altman is born April 22, 1985, in Chicago. He was raised in St. Louis, Missouri, in an upper-middle-class Jewish family. His mother is a dermatologist.
He's a precocious kid, obsessed with computers. At 8, he's programming. By his teen years, he's taking apart computers, teaching himself networking, and getting banned from AOL for hacking.

In 2012 Loopt is acquired by Green Dot Corporation for $43.4 million. It’s neither a failure, nor a massive success. It is a solid outcome for Altman.

More importantly, he joins the startup tech network. A company called Y Combinator backed Loopt. Y Combinator visionary Paul Graham and Sam Altman become close friends. This relationship will change everything for Sam.

In July 2019 Microsoft invests $1 billion in OpenAI.
The deal provides that OpenAI can use Microsoft Azure exclusively for training. In return, Microsoft gets an exclusive license to OpenAI's technology with a deep partnership on product.
Thus, OpenAI, founded as an alternative to corporate AI labs, quickly partners with one of the largest corporations on Earth. Altman believes it provides the resources to pursue the mission. Microsoft's cloud infrastructure, capital, and distribution are essential to make it happen.
OpenAI becomes heavily dependent on Microsoft. The relationship shapes what's possible. Altman believes he can maintain OpenAI's independence and achieve the mission while taking Microsoft's money and resources.

In June 2018 OpenAI releases GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer). It's based on the transformer architecture from Google's "Attention Is All You Need" paper.
The approach is to pre-train a large language model on massive text, then fine-tune it for specific tasks.
The result is impressive for a research demonstration. Here’s how it went:
Junior engineer (excited): "Guys, someone just prompted GPT-1 with ‘Once upon a time' and it finished the sentence!"
Senior researcher: "Cool, what'd it say?"
Junior: "Once upon a time there was a little girl who lived in a village near the forest. Whenever she went out, the little girl wore a red riding cloak, so everyone in the village called her Little Red Riding Hood."
Room goes silent.
Someone finally types: "…that's literally the first paragraph of Little Red Riding Hood. Word for word."
Another engineer: "Did we just train a $1 million plagiarism machine?" 😂
They learn that scale might matter enormously. Bigger models trained on more data might have qualitatively different capabilities, one of which is not plagiarism.
In February 2019 OpenAI announces GPT-2 with 1.5 billion parameters. It can generate surprisingly coherent text.
In spite of its performance, OpenAI decides not to release the full model to the public. It's considered too dangerous. It could enable misinformation at scale.
The decision is criticized because OpenAI's name means open, but now they're withholding research. Altman understands the need for responsible disclosure. As AI becomes more powerful, total openness could be dangerous. Here’s why:
Engineer 1: “I prompted it with ‘My fellow Americans…’ and it wrote a full Trump-style speech about invading Canada for maple syrup rights. Word-for-word cadence. Should we… release this?”

GPT-2: “In 2019, scientists discovered that the Moon is actually made of cheese, confirming long-held suspicions among mice researchers. NASA immediately launched Operation Gouda to secure the dairy reserves before the French could claim them.”
The room erupts in nervous laughter. Someone else tries:
“Prompt: ‘The best way to hide a body is…’”
GPT-2: “The best way to hide a body is to turn it into a compelling short story and submit it to a literary magazine. Editors love gritty realism, and no one ever suspects the metaphor.”
Lead researcher (probably panicking): “Okay, we’re not releasing the full model. We’re staging a ‘gradual release.’ 117M first, then 345M, then maybe 762M… and the 1.5B? That stays in the vault. For safety.”

The first real test of GPT-3 wasn't done by a researcher. It was done by a very bored OpenAI intern named Jake who had been given access at 2 a.m. because no one else was awake.
Jake, half-asleep and fueled by energy drinks, types the most innocent prompt imaginable: "Write a tweet as if you're Elon Musk announcing that Tesla is accepting Dogecoin for cars."
GPT-3 thinks for a millisecond, then spits out: "Just sold my last remaining kidney to buy more Doge. Tesla will now accept Dogecoin for all vehicles starting next week. To the moon? Nah—to Mars. #DogeArmy #TeslaDoge"
Jake stares. Refreshes. Same output. He screenshots it and—against every rule in the NDA—DMs it to a friend on Discord with the caption: "lol this thing is unhinged."
The friend, being a friend, immediately posts it to Reddit without context. Within 90 minutes the tweet has 47k upvotes, people are tagging Elon, and crypto Twitter is in meltdown mode. "TO THE MOOOOON!!!" replies flood in. Someone even starts a Change.org petition for Tesla to actually accept Doge.
Meanwhile, back at OpenAI HQ, alarms start going off.

Ilya Sutskever (calmly sipping tea): "The model learned from Twitter. It knows what Elon would say if he lost his mind."

Questions arise on whether this is thinking. Will it replace humans? Is it plagiarism? What about bias?
The AI safety community holds that ChatGPT is impressive but concerning. It's accelerating AI deployment before the safety issue is solved.
The public is amazed. Some are terrified. Everyone is curious.
Suddenly, Sam Altman is one of the most famous people in tech. He appears on podcasts and news shows and attends conferences. He's everywhere, explaining ChatGPT, and discussing AI's future.

In one of the most stunning departures in tech history, on Friday, November 17, 2023, OpenAI announces to the world that Sam Altman has been fired:
"Mr. Altman's departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities."

The announcement is shocking. No one expected this development. Of all the people in tech, Altman seemed untouchable. OpenAI was riding high a year after the release of ChatGPT. What just happened?
Organizationally, OpenAI has a non-profit board controlling a for-profit subsidiary. The board felt their duty was to the mission of safe AGI, not to shareholders or employees or the public. The board was dominated by AI safety advocates: Ilya Sutskever (chief scientist), Helen Toner (safety researcher), Tasha McCauley (tech ethics), Adam D'Angelo (Quora CEO).
That night company president and co-founder Greg Brockman resigns in protest. Researchers, engineers, and others threaten to quit. Microsoft is blindsided. CEO Satya Nadella is furious. They have invested billions and feel they have an implicit stake in the management of the company. There was no warning to Altman’s termination and no clear rationale behind it. Microsoft quickly made an offer to create a new AI division at Microsoft with guaranteed resources, if Altman comes aboard.
The ultimatum was clear and felt from several directions: reinstate Altman or the company will collapse and Microsoft will become the beneficiary.
Virtually all 700+ OpenAI employees signed a letter demanding Altman's return and the board's resignation. They threaten to quit and join Altman at Microsoft.
When he was fired by the board, employees were ready and willing to follow him. This is because Altman had cultivated strong one‑on‑one relationships, mentoring and supporting talent. Many saw him not just as a boss, but as a champion of their careers. He created a culture where employees felt like pioneers, united against the risks and opportunities of AI. That collective identity made them willing to rally behind him. During moments of tension, whether with the board or external critics, Altman projected calm and determination.
